Oculus and Respawn are Leading the Way
Virtual Reality is a big deal, and developers Oculus and Respawn are bringing Medal of Honor to the VR headset. Medal of Honor is a classic title in the shooter genre and has been around since the early days of console gaming. I remember playing Medal of Honor back on the GameCube and PlayStation 2. It’s a pretty solid title. Although, Call of Duty was better in most areas from my memory. What I remember most from the game was the epic soundtrack which reminded me of the Brothers in Arms TV Miniseries from HBO.
I have been waiting for a real first-person shooter game to come to the VR headset but nothing ever did until now. So, it will be interesting to see how well it plays out. The Medal of Honor series has always been second best to CoD, though. I don’t think most people would recognize MoH to be as popular or as significant in the gaming industry as CoD. It’s just been more successful, period.
Besides, VR hasn’t been kind to first person shooter games in general and most people get dizzy from the weird feeling the first-person in VR experience offers. It makes people have a hard time standing because the world in the video game and the real world don’t blend well enough to offer a good equilibrium.
But, Medal of Honor now has a headstart in the VR space which is going to make it leagues ahead of other competitors and their offerings. Other game franchises have been piling onto the VR space for a while now. But, most of them have not been successful at the first-person shooter subgenre.
The good news is this opportunity is another chance for the first-person shooter genre to come alive in VR. But, it remains to be seen exactly what the consumer will get out of it yet. Surely, when there is major success, the ripples will be felt throughout the tech universe.
